i had a total hysterectomy, cervix, part of the vagina. lymph nodes and ovaries 14 months ago, I still feel like crap, i have alot of down days, no energy and I have gained 9lbs. I'm alive and cancer free atm but I fully understand your comments. I'm tired of being tired - ungrateful though that may sound. What mg of hormone replacement are you on? They upped mine from 1mg a day to 2mg a day and that made the world of difference for the past 12 months. have you got bladder problems and an ongoing back ache? those are my most recent let downs. also read that many people can suffer from depression after major hysterectomy - perhaps you should talk to your doc? your oestrogen levels may be letting you down.
I too have had a hysterectomy about 4 months ago im 20 and had to have it for medical reasons. but i have gained like 9 lbs and its all in my stomach. Normally it would go to my hips. its so weird and i hate it. I am also having alot of no energy down day which sucks with me going to college i have to make my self get out of bed and go to class.
I can't believe you mentioned the stomach fat! Isn't it horrible! I'm 36, had a total a yr ago. Three yrs in remission, happy to be alive, not so happy abt going up a size in jeans every 2 mos. They gave me zoloft for menopause side effects, which I recently found out also causes weight gain, but I can't take estrogen bc of cancer. Maybe I could cry off some lbs if I top the zoloft? I, too, feel much older than my age. I told my daughter today it was ninety. Will check out hystersisters and a treadmill when I can make it there, but I always need a serious nap when I am done. It is good to know I am not alone...
Too all my hysterosisters, you are not alone . I had`a total abd. hystero. 13 months ago due to fibroids and endometriosis. i have gained 25 pounds and find it hard to even get dressed most days. I ache everywhere and when I do get dressed , i am even more depressed plus I can't breathe in my jeans. Bought a treadmill, I think I'll have a heart attack after 4 minutes. HELP!!!!
The average weight gain in the first year after hysterectomy is 25 lbs if the ovaries are removed, and slightly less when the ovaries are not removed. Although the amount of weight gained after the first year is not as much every year thereafter, it does usually continue to gradually go up. One theory is that the metabolism is slowed down by hysterectomy and removal of the ovaries, so if you eat the same kind of foods in the same quantity after the surgery that you were alway accustomed to before, you'll continue to gain weight. If you decrease the quantity of food that you're eating at every meal, first eating 1/4 less, then 1/2 as much per meal, you will lose weight. Exercise helps too, walking, tread mill, and jumping rope are excellent ways to get your boost your metabolism and keep your muscles strong.
Most of us are not taught very much about what and where the female organs are, and about their lifelong functions. If you go to the HERS Foundation's website and click on "Female Anatomy Video" you'll understand why hysterectomy causes so many problems, and how to avoid the surgery if it is not lifesaving.

I am so glade I am not alone! I had a full hysterectomy 1 1/2 ago I am 43 and feel like I am 55. Cancer free now. I have asked my General, nutritionist and my Obgyn Doctors and they don't give me any answers other that eat better exercise more. I have done that and more nothing really has worked. I think it is the medications I am on as well (antidepressant, gout and kidney stone medications). I have to drink water like a fish. I would love to find out if anyone has anything they take that would help better that the advice I have already received. This in itself is unhealthy. Please help!!!

If you are dealing with weight gain, the best thing you can do is undertake an exercise regimen with a diet, which would help you with the weight at least. I would talk to your doctor about how to alleviate symptoms of menopause thought because it sounds like you're dealing with that at this point. have you considered that possibility?
