understanding stage v kidney disease

my mother was diagnosed with stage v kidney disease in oct. i am her caregiver. her kidney function went from 17 to 12 in three months. she has severe edema in left leg. dialysis or transplant has been denied. as caregiver what can i expect atr this stage and how long can a person survive without dialysis?
