Typhoid fever is caused by the bacterium Salmonella typhi. This bacterium lives only in human. Persons with typhoid fever carry the bacteria in their blood and intestinal tract. Some people who recover from the disease continue to carry the bacteria in their guts. Both groups of people continue to shed the bacteria in their feces. Typhoid fever is spread by eating food or drinking water contaminated with the bacteria.
