fractured sternum and ribs

I suffered a fractured sternum and 2 broken ribs after landing on a table. Later, around one week, I was asked to give a random breath anaylasis test by the police, I was unable to give sufficient air for the test. The result came back as inconclusive. Appart from the emense pain, why wasn't I able to give the Police a sufficient sample?
