Hi. A son of a friend was diagnosed with dyslexia. His hand writing is all messy and he has problems with reading too. It was all clear when he started to go to elementary school. His IQ is higher than average, but still his writing and reading skills are poor. Would like to hear something about the treatment.

Hi. Dyslexia is a specific learning disability. A main characteristic of dyslexia is difficulty in developing reading skills in elementary school kids. Reading and writing difficulties comes from a reduced ability to associate visual symbols with verbal sounds. So far, the only help are traditional educational remedial techniques, such as phonological awareness training, which can improve his reading skills. The result will be better if you start early with the treatment.
