hi, cellulitis is an acute inflammation of the connective tissues of the skin (basically the cells), caused by different types of bacteria. our skin has lots of different bacteria living and growing on it without causing a problem, however if there is a break in the skin or a cut of some sort the bacteria can get in grow and cause the tissues to become very red, hot irritated and painful. it ususally occurs on the lower legs or the face, however can occur in other areas. it can cause the person to feel unwell in themselves and develop a fever, it often causes the skin to look quite glossy and stretched, with a definite border that grows quickly within the first 24hrs. it can be treated with antibiotics at home and painkillers within 7 - 10 days if caught quickly. otherwise it may be necessary to go into hospital for i.v antibiotics. hope this helps.
