Atenelol was prescribed to me one week ago. I was having heart palpitations and rapid pulse. After blood tests, I was diagnosed with hyperthyroidism. Apparently, that disease causes arrhythmia and very rapid pulse. I am now waiting for results from a nuclear thyroid scan as to whether I have to have radiation therapy or removal of the thyroid. The side effects I'm experiencing from Atenelol are swelling of the legs and feet and if I drink caffein, the rapid pulse begins again. I hope I get this over with soon. I'm not a pill taker.
I'm 31, and have been on Atenelol for a couple of weeks now after having really high blood pressure at my last couple office visits. I am having pain along the left side of my neck, along what feels to be my carotid artery. The pain seems to be between my left ear radiating down to just a couple inches above my left clavicle in my neck. Has anyone else experienced problems like this?
I am 31, and have been on Atenelol for 2 weeks after having really high BP in my last couple of office visits. Although my BP is lower than ever, the last couple of days I have had pain in my left ear all the way down to just above my left clavicle. The pain seems to be tender to touch just over my left carotid. Has anyone else experienced this as a side effect of Atenelol?
I was recently diagnosed ith HBP at this late age of 53. I have never had any problems ith pressure until some time late last year. The doctor prescribed 50mg Atenelol once daily, then every other day. I too am experiency some of thse effects of low sex drive. The problem is that I live in West Africa and do not have the access to first world medical treatment.
Someone has recommended Labetalol. I am planning to see a different doctor and ask the same questions, but does anyone have anything to offer.

I'm glad I've finally found people that have been using atenelol for awhile. I've been suffering with hair loss alot. I wasn't sure if it was the atenelol or not. Hair loss runs in my family after the women get older. My hair loss started when I was almost 40. I am now 48 1/2 yrs. old. I used to have so much hair. What I have left is healthy hair. All this time I thought it was the way I had been taking care of my hair. I'm getting off of this drug. I've been taking it along with HCTZ. I had had trouble with arrythmias and the root cause was found to be excess skin within my heart. I had a heart ablation and I've been okay since then but I was left on that medicine because it helps the HCTZ control my blood pressure.
I've been on it for about since last October for high blood pressure. Going in tothe doc tomorrow for the incredible swelling (Where did my ankles go?), the chest pains, the fainting spells, and the incredible weight gain. I'm glad I read this before I go. I'm going to insist that he take me off the meds and let my body heal itself. I'd rather die young and skinny, then old, fat, and bald!!! There has to be a better way!! The depression is so bad that I lay awake at night trying to gather the nerve to end it. Then daylight comes and I can't face myself. Thanks for your notes. I know I'm not going insane.
hi, the side effects as described for consumers are as follows -
โข Get emergency medical help if you have any of these signs of an allergic reaction: hives; difficulty breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat.
โข Call your doctor at once if you have any of these serious side effects:
ยท slow or uneven heartbeats;
ยท feeling light-headed, fainting;
ยท feeling short of breath, even with mild exertion;
ยท swelling of your ankles or feet;
ยท nausea, stomach pain, low fever, loss of appetite, dark urine, clay-colored stools, jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes);
ยท depression; or
ยท cold feeling in your hands and feet.
โข Other less serious side effects are more likely to occur, such as:
ยท decreased sex drive, impotence, or difficulty having an orgasm;
ยท sleep problems (insomnia);
ยท tired feeling; or
ยท anxiety, nervousness.
โข Side effects other than those listed here may also occur. Talk to your doctor about any side effect that seems unusual or that is especially bothersome.
all of these should be listed on the product info leaflet that is supplied with every box and as a rule your doctor would discuss any significant symptoms with you, most of these can be reversed and other tablets provided if the side effects are highlighted to your doctor when they begin to be a problem. hope this helps

I have been taking 25mg/day of atenelol for about 7 years now due to paroxysmal atrial tachycardia. My heartbeat returned to normal (except for the occasional periods when I indulged in coffee) and I thought I was side effect free.
However, 6 years ago I began to get skin rashes that were later diagnosed as psoriasis. Also, about 6 years ago, I began to develop mild tinnitus in my right ear.
Has anyone had any experience with psoriasis or ringing ears that they believe was caused by their taking atenelol? And also, are there alternatives to atenelol for irregular heart beats?

I am a 58 yr old female and have been taking atenelol for 3 1/2 years. I also quit smoking at that time, so never gave it a second thought when I gained over 45 lbs in 6 mos, although I had quit before, gained weight and lost it back later - can't now. Started out taking 25 mg, then was reduced to 12.5 mg over a year ago. Didn't look on the bottle (my mistake) and instead of breaking the 25 mg in half, I still was still taking the whole dose. Almost a year ago, I bought several bottles of this drug in Mexico (to save money) and again never looked at the dosage on the bottle (in small letters) and I just found out that this was 50 mg. I have had huge hair loss since taking the larger dose, sleep loss, rashes on my forearms (non itching, gets redder with exercise - sun seems to make it worse, but not sure), but did notice some hair thinning before this, low sex drive, depression and eye infection (been trying to get rid of this for a couple of years almost - my eye doctor says that it could be cause from the drug because of the drying affect on my eyelids that holds bacteria- we just put this together - with the realization of my taking the higher dose last week). My legs and joints hurt, and muscle at top of feet near leg joint. I have lowered dose to 12.5 mg for now, and maybe I'll wean off if symptoms don't go away. Will keep posting.
