Why does my chest hurt like I've swallowed something very cold.

For the past 2-3 weeks I have off and on pain in the middle of my chest. It feels like I have either swallowed a huge piece of meat or something or like I have just swallowed something really cold. This is not just when I eat. It just comes on for no reason . It has also awakend me at night. Should I have an upper GI?
