Why Do Alcohol Beverages Cause Bleeding?

I have been eating oatmeal every day for 6 months, and still had bleeding.


After drinking too much at the super bowl party, the bleeding was bad.

I went to an gatroenterologist (sp) who scheduled a colonoscopy, that was this morning.

He found a large polyp in my rectum and removed it. He said the area looked good after but i have to wait one to two weeks to see if it is malignant or benign.

Be smart people. Go to a dr. I ignored it for a year and it doesnt go away, just got worse.

My conscience is clear now whatever comes out, because i have done all i can do, and will continue to regardless of my presferences if my dr tells me what not to eat and drink.

I would give up drinking and eating meat for sure, if requested. I definitely will keep eating my bowl of oatmeal every morning.

I had bleeding hemorrhoids and had them removed with banding. I did have a fissure and I think it's better now. If I have one glass of wine or two everything is fine. If I have a bottle while partying, I have bleeding the next morning. My doctor has checked for blood in the stool and everything else is fine. Dr. Oz says that men have an enzyme in their stomach that metabolizes alcohol that women don't have. I have to learn not to binge. I have had severe rectal bleeding since 1992. After numerous doctors and 3 normal colonoscopies I figured out the problem on my own. Last year after 4 glasses of wine and an asprin ,I bled so bad that I was hospitalized over night. That was a wake up call and on my own I decided to give up alcohol and see if it helped. Its been 11 monthes now and the only time I have had rectal bleeding was in september ,when I consumed 2 glasses of champayne at my sister in laws wedding and new years after consuming 3 glasses of wine. I did experience bleeding in 1995 when I was pregnant with my 5th child and I did not drink anything the entire 9 monthes,but it was not as bad. Anyway I feel so much healthier and my husband says I nolonger snore. My 21 year old daughter has experienced rectal bleeding after drinking so maybe it has a genetic link?

I have had this problem for awhile now. I'm 25 years old and have probably experienced this for around 3 or 4 years now. I was previously a heavy drinker, probably drinking every friday or saturday night if not longer.. going on binges, if you will. Now I probably drink around once or twice a month, but whether it was for extended periods or isolated periods I still have rectal bleeding. I basically only notice this after using the bathroom and seeing it on the tissue paper after the 3rd or 4th wipe, lol. There are cases where this could indicate a bowell syndrome but it is more likely that your stomach lining is just sensitive to the alchohol. I would suggest swallowing 3-4 teaspoons of olive oil before drinking... it lines your stomach and seems to kind of soften the blow the alcohol takes on it. I've been doing it for a while now and after I did it for a couple months I didn't experience anymore bleeding. However, this is all based on speculation and could really be all in my head... but wether physical or psychological it seemed to work

Same for me, I noticed that if I drink and eat foods rich in iron, magnesium and calcium, it does not happen. It seems like drinking may cause anemia-like symptoms in people because it reduces the absorption of some important vitamins and minerals.

I got off my need for alcohol and then bleeding problem by drinking herbal tea instead of beers or spirits. I still had fun with friends but no bleeding.
It was the good herbs though from that lady called mary. or was it jane?

I know this is not legal so I will go to hell or suddenly start taking hard stuff(or so THEY say) but it stopped me drinking and then bleeding the next day....and I save sooo much money now too.

I'm so glad I found this post - the same thing has been happening to me for the first time this week. Initially I thought it was co-incidence, but I definitely have very light breakthrough bleeding from my vagina after drinking the night before.

I've had this problem for about 3 years. I'm 30, and I was previously a fairly heavy drinker (read as college student). Now I drink 1 - 3 times a month, and probably 5-10 beers when I do (I'm a big dude). The blood ONLY happens after I drink, and without fail it happens after I drink, whether it's 1 beer or 10.

Some things to note: some people have suggested it may be a stomach lining problem: this is almost definitely not the case. The blood is bright and fresh--if it came from your stomach lining it would have been absorbed into the excrement and result in super dark feces. Because the blood is so fresh, and not in the least absorbed, the source of bleeding has to be very close to the "end of the line" if you will.

I don't know what it is--it's been driving me crazy for years. Unfortunately now that I'm motivated enough to see a doctor about it, I was laid off recently and have no health insurance now. Good luck to everyone in here, I hope we learn more!

I'm being treated for an anal fissure. I thought for sure it was hemorrhoids, but it was not. I'm a weekend drinker, drink 5-7 good strong whiskeys per night on the weekends. When Sunday came, it was unbearable to sit down and impossible to go for a car ride. Lots of pain during bowel movements as well. After a few days it would usually subside and be back to normal. But it got bad enough to go into the Doc. I told him about my alcohol consumption and he said that it had nothing to do with it. I DISAGREE. I'm using a prescription around my anus now and am taking Metamucil, drinking water. After the first 4 weeks of the treatment, things seemed to be fine for a couple of weeks. I went camping with the boys and went on a big bender and POW. I'm back on the medication for 3 weeks now and it seems to be fine again now even after drinking. I'm give a lot of consideration that it does have a direct correlation to the liver and the drinking. I will just have to cut back and test the theory...

my ibs is triggered by alcohol and coffee, the more you drink the worst it gets, it sucks but you have to give up alcohol
im on amyltipline (for ibs-d) which causes stools to get harder, and thus cause tear and roids
there are treatments for roids i suspect you have ibs
go and get a gi scan, but most importantlt dont let ur ibs develop, the worse it gets, the longer it takes to go back to nomral
2 years of heavy after works drinking in a corporate enviroment almost destroyed my gut
usually the simplest answer is the right one
