HI. I know that this may not be the most appropriate question for this forum, but I would like to find out more about thiamine deficiency. So, if anybody has something to share with me, your answers will be appreciated. Thanks.

Well, Thiamine (B1) is a coenzyme for the decarboxylation of pyruvate and the oxidation of alpha keto-glutamic acid. Thiamine deficiency produces accumulation of pyruvate and lactate, reduction of acetate, citrate and alpha-keto-glutarate and reduced acetylcholine synthesis. Any of these metabolic changes can lead to severe health problems. Actually, it is more-less same with all vitamins deficiencies. Thiamine deficiency can lead to degeneration of both myelin and axons with axonal reaction in anterior horn cells and posterior root degeneration with secondary degeneration of posterior columns. Hope this helps.
