I have a cervical herniated disk pressing into the spine. I have seen two neurosurgeons that have convinced me that I need surgery. One spine doctor recommended artificial disk and one recommended a cage which option is better?

As far as I know for a cervical herniated disc surgery, the standard is an anterior cervical discectomy and fusion. My sister had this surgery 8 years ago. I think that Cage technology is just a different way of obtaining a fusion. One level fusion does not greatly affect the mechanics of the neck, so there are a lot of motion segments in the neck and fusing one does not put all that much pressure on the unfused disc segments. However, sometimes artificial disc technology may prove to be useful in the future to help maintain the normal mechanics of the spine.
