Researchers found that a high percentage of baby cot deaths is linked with the mother who smoked during their pregnancy. The number of cot deaths has fallen thanks to the campaign that babies should sleep on their backs, but babies who die from Sudden Infant Death Syndrome who were born to mothers who smoked while being pregnant had risen up to 30%.

What public needs to do is to send a clear message about the risk of smoking during pregnancy and what it may cause. The impact on baby is before and after birth so it’s important that if mother continues smoking she should avoid smoking around the baby and reduce the risk of possible cot death.

Statistics say that a baby exposed to cigarette smoke eight hours daily has ten times more risk of SIDS then a baby that’s never exposed. So, it affirms the warning that maternal smoking is the most important when it comes to risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome.

Reports say that if no women smoked while being pregnant the risk of cot deaths could be avoided by 60%.
