Scleroderma/Systemic Sclerosis

Scleroderma is an autoimmune, connective tissue disease, characterized by the abnormal growth of connective tissue which supports the skin and internal organs. Scleroderma can be limited to skin thickening and tightening, but could also involve blood vessels and internal organs. Systemic sclerosis is can be limited scleroderma, which has gradual onset, is restricted to certain areas of the body, and can affect internal organs later; and diffuse scleroderma, which begins suddenly, thickening covers larger area, and can affect internal organs as well. Symptoms include: calcinosis, meaning forming of calcium deposits in connective tissue, Raynaud’s syndrome manifesting in painful, purple extremities like fingers, nose... in cold, esophageal dysfunction and
telangiectasis, small, red spots forming on hands and face.
