My Husband's recent surgery

My husband had neck surgery due to an auto accident and they had to rebreak his neck and work on C2 through C4. He feels fairly well except the spasms in his right shoulder are unbearable and his pain medications does nothing. He is unable to barely get from the bed to the Den. Anyone experience this. I am getting worried. Called the Doctor and they said this is normal. I cannot get him to walk as the pain is to intense.
