Is a child with varicella contagious?

Hello, folks. My kid’s friend got varicella. My son is persistent in visiting his sick friend, but I am not sure if I should let him. I would like to know if a child with varicella is contagious or not. I would appreciate if anyone could tell me this. Thank you in advance for this.
