Help!?!? Menstrual Cramps

So I have had my period for over two weeks, I went to the ER and they did lab work and felt my abdominal area...and said they thought it was a hormone imbalance...but is it common to have menstrual cramps at the beginning and near the end..I wasn't having them in the middle of my cycle I did at first, then they went away...now they are back! Help!?!?!?
