Gaining weight and your period

Everytime I get my period, I always seem to put on about five pounds. I loose it pretty quickly afterwards, but only because I have to crash diet for about a week. But I keep having to do this 28 days! Is it normal, and is there something I can either eat or do whenever this happens?
