Diabetes is a world-wide spread disease that costs taxpayers billions of dollars annually. With a discovery of a new gene linked to type 2 diabetes, many people with risk of developing the disease will be able to prevent it.

The gene called PSARL is found in muscles and is located on chromosome 3q.

The identification of PSARL gene, linked to diabetes risk, will allow creation of new diagnostic tests and drugs. By simply taking a swab from patients’ mouths, doctors will be able to identify the gene and warn the patients of the risk.
Diabetes has been linked to poor nutrition and lack of exercise and can therefore be prevented by improving lifestyles.

Tests are being developed and may be available on the markets in two-year time and pharmaceutical companies have drugs for treating the faulty gene on their minds.
