The study taken shows that higher levels of folate in the body is connected to the higher birth weight. This vitamin differently known as folic acid and vitamin B9 is associated with the preventing birth defects like spina bifida but the new search shows the link to the birth weight.
It is said that heavier babies tend to be healthier in infancy and later life.
It is recommended for women to take folate supplements before the conception and during early pregnancy. In the USA the folate has been added to all wheat products since 1998.
The scientists believe that folic acid influences birth weight because it is an important nutrient for growth and gene activity in the developing of the fetus.
