I had same problem for about 8 months, treated for sinus infection, didnt work. I tried everything for GERD thinking that was the problem, didnt work either. Then I read about the cause being allergies and that zyrtec-d would help. Amazingly it seems to be working for me, thank god. The d is for the added decongestant, zyrtec d will slow the amount of mucus that is created, and stop the post nasal drip or at least slow it down. Make sure it has the D if you try it, worked for me. Good luck, hope it works for you all too!

I have had enough of this to be honest, I have only just turned 16 and now I have been having to live with this f@#$^&* gunk in the back of my throat. I was in hospital for what the doctors think was a bad virus affecting my glands and causing me to go yellow, but because I live in the UK, they are probably all wrong as per usual, if you want my opinion, I think it was glandular fever, they've also told me that the yellowness was casused by gilberts syndrome, they can just get fucked!!! This is a bloody pain in the arse, why doesn't the doctor do anything about it? Instead of giving me some bloody nasal sprey for a month or two, IT DOESN'T f@#$^&* WORK! I have been under a lot of depression lately, and it's all because of this nasty experience of going to hospital and not having a f@#$^&* clue what the f*** is wrong with me! Even today, I have to make my own assumptions up. I am now in a queue to see a specialist for depression, because to be honest, I've had enough of the tears, but ultimately, what would make me happy is to have all this problem cleared up, the excessive mucus in my throat, and the depression, and the worrying! I used to be on top of the world, a lively chap who made everyone laugh, but as you can tell by my f@#$^&* swearing, I'm not anything like that any more! Life is pointless, if god wished the best of the world, then he wouldn't have made diseases and viruses, and f@#$^&* chavs! That is it, I want to see an ENT specialist, and if they can't rid this problem, then I'll tell them exactly how I feel, and then I'll probably smack them one! And my f@#$^&* doctor who seems to think that everything is fine, well it isnt't, especialy not for me at the moment. How can one continue to enjoy life and look forward to a good future when one is having to live like this? When I blew the candles out on my birthday cake, my one wish was for me to feel good about myself... |
this is EXACTLY what is happening to me.... i have a thick unmovable "glob" of mucus thats in the back of my throat. ITS DRIVING ME INSANE! i feel it effects my tone of voice, everytime i speak i have to clear my throat or else i cant even make out a word! its extremely embarrasing... i used to make people laugh but i cant anymore... i've had this glob in my throat since grade 9 and now im in grade 12 and its really depressing... i dont feel good about myself anymore. i've been to the doctors many times half the time they just shrug it off as its nothing, but ITS NOT! other times the give me sprays and shit like that and its doesnt work. not to mention my breath stinks even though i brush my teeth, floss, mouth wash. i've had a few incidents where i started choking and couldnt stop for 15 minutes it was a horrible feeling.
im not sure what the reason behind this is... i have smoked before, very little though, i smoked marijuana often before but i have stopped, not sure if thats the cause. i think it might have to do something with my ears because when i try and clear my nostils my ears "pop". a few weeks ago in the mornings i would cough out a alot of mucus that was clear with chunks or little pieces in the middle, and a few times it was bloody. it feels like the mucus is almost solid and no mater how much i try and hork it out it wont budge and when i eat it builds up. i need to fix this its driving me crazy!
This problem has become progressively worse for me over the past year. I went to the doctor when I knew I had a sinus infection. He put me on an antibiotic and Medrol Dose Pack. The methylprednisolone worked great - the excess mucus was gone. When I finished the pack, the problem resurfaced. After researching the long-term effects of steroids (in Medrol Dose pack), I decided against asking for a prolonged prescription for that. I called the doctor and asked him to call me in something similar. When I got to the pharmacy, the pharmacist told me that my doctor's office called me in Claritin-D, which you don't need a prescription for. Nice, huh? The Claritin helps with my chronic sinusitis but does not help with the excess mucus. I am going to try the Apple Cider Vinegar pills and the sinus irrigation as nothing else on this forum seems to be the "magic" cure. Thanks for all the great posts and info.
did it work? I too all of the sudden after having a respiratory flu have a lump in my throat now that I cant seem to cough up, it is driving me insane!!I almost had a panic attack about it last night, my husband did everything he could to calm me down. Please tell me if it worked, I am going to try everything I have read here.
I've read through all of these posts and I felt that different people had different probs & solutions that I don't think we're talking about the same problem anymore. The one post that came closest to what I'm experiencing was from username "frog".. so I'm just gonna write down my symptoms here. I have this chronic prob for as long as I could remember (i'm 26 now).. it's this constant thin mucus in the back of my throat and it GETS WORSE AFTER DRINKING MILK, and running/exercising. In addition, I have chronic allergies so I think it may be related. Sometimes I feel like I have to suck it out from the top/back of my nose real bad to spit out the mucus. I have to clear my throat a lot and it does get embarrassing and annoying. Sometimes i feel it gets really stuck that i can't breathe and i get really tired from not having enough oxygen and i could feel my heart racing.
I've found a couple of remedies that temporarily helped me. I found that drinking really concentrated, bitter green tea helped clear that mucus and allow me to swallow it down. The more bitter and concentrated green tea, the better it worked for me. I'm talking about the strong dark tea leaves taht come in a can that u can get at an asian supermarket, not the weak ones that come in little tea bags all ground up. I've never tried it with sugar because i actually like bitter tea.. so i don't know if it will work. I also find that using Saline nasal spray to be helpful. I hope this will help out some of you. But these are only temporary solutions, if any one else has any other remedies, please share.

You need to see a gastroenterologist. I have the same problem. I have GERD and reflux. I also have a cough, asthma, sinus problems, hiatal hernia . I never have heartburn.
But if your symptoms are severe, occur often, or are accompanied by coughing, wheezing, asthma, a sore throat, difficulty swallowing or chest pain, talk to your doctor.
Other nerves that are stimulated do not produce pain. Instead, they stimulate yet other nerves that provoke coughing. In this way, refluxed liquid can cause coughing without ever reaching the throat! In a similar manner, reflux into the lower esophagus can stimulate esophageal nerves that connect to and can stimulate nerves going to the lungs.
GERD is a common cause of unexplained coughing. Although GERD also may be a cause of asthma, it is more likely that it precipitates asthmatic attacks in patients who already have asthma. GERD is a chronic condition. Once it begins, it usually is life-long. If there is injury to the lining of the esophagus (esophagitis), this also is a chronic condition. Moreover, after the esophagus has healed with treatment and treatment is stopped, the injury will return in most patients within a few months. Once treatment for GERD is begun, therefore, it usually will need to be continued indefinitely although it is argued that in some patients with intermittent symptoms and no esophagitis, treatment can be intermittent and done only during symptomatic periods.
As is often the case, the body has ways (mechanisms) to protect itself from the harmful effects of reflux and acid. For example, most reflux occurs during the day when individuals are upright. In the upright position, the refluxed liquid is more likely to flow back down into the stomach due to the effect of gravity. In addition, while individuals are awake, they repeatedly swallow, whether or not there is reflux. Each swallow carries any refluxed liquid back into the stomach. Finally, the salivary glands in the mouth produce saliva, which contains bicarbonate. With each swallow, bicarbonate-containing saliva travels down the esophagus. The bicarbonate neutralizes the small amount of acid that remains in the esophagus after gravity and swallowing have removed most of the liquid.
Gravity, swallowing, and saliva are important protective mechanisms for the esophagus, but they are effective only when individuals are in the upright position. At night during sleep, gravity is not in effect, swallowing stops, and the secretion of saliva is reduced. Certain conditions make a person susceptible to GERD. For example, GERD can be a serious problem during pregnancy.

I too have been suffering from this for a year now. I recently went to an allergist, and I am taking asthma medicine along with medication for GERD. It seems to be helping. Gerd can trigger asthma or visa versa, but either way it has taken a long time to get any relief. I have had a thick mucus in my throat and always having to spit. It's been hell. Nobody could figure it out, and most doctors have acted like I was making it all up. Anyway, you might want to try an allergist. Believe me I went to the allergist last, thinking there was noway I had an allergy, but ends up I have an allergy to my dogs, and it's bringing all of this on. I'm keeping the dogs, as they are my babies, but have started the medicines for both issues, and it is working a little bit, anything is better than what I've had for the past year. I'll keep trying it and pray it keeps helping me. It's not perfect, but it's better. Try an allergist even if you don't believe you have an allergy, I didn't try it because i didn't think I had one, but this has helped me the most in the past year. Good luck.
I have the same problem all the time, It's GERD. I don't ever have heartburn but have discovered that GERD can happen at night when you are asleep and you don't even know. You wake up with a sore throat and sometimes just a lot of mucous in your throat as well. I hate having this because I have found very little relief with everything I have tried. I don't take the PPIs anymore as I cannot afford them. I also just think it is stupid to take them for the rest of my life. You might just try and figure out what is causing this for you. Unfortunately, for some of us (like me) I don't think there is a specific cause. I have gotten a little better over time but I don't think I will ever kick this for good. Good luck to you.
Ive read this whole thread, and so far, nobody has really posted about what i am most concerned about: the nasty dark brown globs of hardened mucus that accumulates in the folds of the back of my mouth/throat. I have to clear them out periodically by shoving my finger in the back of my mouth and mine them out.
it is so disturbing. they stink and its scary.
where do they come from and why are they accumulating there?
its only started in the last 6 months. the intervals of clearing the chunks are about a month at a time now. they seem to only be occurring on my left side, none so far on my right. i have always had allergies and i use an inhaler from time to time, but why now?
Does anybody else have these symptoms? What to do about it?
