Hello! My father came back from cataract surgery few days ago. He started to have problems with his vision long time ago but he wasn't considering a surgery till the day when he wasn't able to do his everyday activities any more. His surgery went fine and I took him home the same day. He felt mild itching the day after but we thought it was a normal reaction. Yesterday his eye was red and painful and he felt terrible headache. I took him to the hospital and he was diagnosed endophthalmitis. He was prescribed some antibiotics and sent home. I am really worried.

Hello! Cataract surgery is a procedure that disrupts the integrity of the globe just as other procedures as glaucoma surgery, retinal or radial keratotomy. It occurs when the organisms that reside at the eyelashes, eyelid or conjunctiva are introduced at the time of surgery and cause infection. You shouldn't worry. It is usual that patients with postoperative endophthalmitis are not admitted to the hospital. The treatment always involves antibiotics which are sometimes combined with steroids. Be in touch with your ophthalmologist and your father will feel better in few days.

I have endothamilitis and had to undergo painful injections first removing the vitreous gel for biopsy and then 3 injections of antibiotics. Anyone who says this will clear up in a short time has not had this infection. It is a sight threatening infection and I have a blood clot on my retina from the biopsy and injections. I have to still watch daily for signs of loss of my vision in my right eye. I am still having to be checked almost daily and continue with predisone drops and atropine in my eyes. If I had known then what I know now I would have waited to have this surgery until the cataracts were really bad. Anyone who contracts this so called sterile infection should be vigilant for any signs of change in the eye.[/b]
