E coli infections have been linked to other long lasting illnesses. Two of them being Crohn's Disease and Ulcerative colitis. There has been a study about Mankato, Minnesota where multiple people have contracted Crohn's disease after swimming in waters know to have high e coli counts.

See

I believe swimming in a man made lake after a rainstorm is what led to my daughter getting crohn's. After checking county records I found that water testing records for the day after found e coli greater than 200 cfu/dL. Please only swim in places were there is assurance of cleanliness.
