hello ppl , look guys geographic tongue is sometimes related to some organ problems but mainly its a generalized sensitivity of the tongue due to some food , liquid , or even to smoking chronic smokers seem to face this the most , its not an infection coz infections spread they donot just stay there on a place or an area od the tongue , well another thing aswell i have been having some ulcers in my tongue sometimes painful and sometimes not plus a coat that changes from time to time and from place to place , well guys its mainly related to chronic or periodic nose stuffness
which makes the tongue dry and appears coated and sometimes ulcuring , also one thing this maybe due to vitamin B2 or zinc diffeciency
but mainly its not thrush or something serious especially its sometimes considered as thrush which is a wrong preception . guys just try to avoid what makes ur tongue ulcers, and if u are a smoker try to quit , and avoid getting ur tongue dry for periods of time

waiting for ur replies
Dr k

Thanks for all of the tips. I too suffer from BMS. Just like many of you, sugar makes it worse. Soda or juice, even Kool Aid all give an immediate flare up. I believe it is the citric acid. My BMS began after a back injury and sore throat that made me have to be on antibiotics (Biaxin), steroids, pain killers and ibuprofen all at the same time.

The only time it seems to be totally gone is WHILE I'M EATING! THAT'S A DANGEROUS POSITION TO BE IN!

I've been treated for thrush, diagnosed with GERD and tried four or five different meds for acid reflux. For me, these only intensified my symptoms and I went back off of them. I had an endoscopy that said I had mild acid reflux and a mild hyatel hernia.

I too have noticed sometimes eating peppers seems to help. It makes me think they counter the acid. Aren't peppers usually alkalai? The sugar and white flour making it worse makes me still think of some kind of yeast, because it feeds on these.

I have come to believe that I do have some type of systemic problem, as I am also having recurring urinary tract infections and light chills in the morning. God, let somebody read this, turn on a light bulb in research and find a cure.

Until then, these are the things that have helped me most:

Avoid sugar and acid food and drinks.
Chew sugar free gum constantly
Brush teeth, tongue and gums often with baking soda/ peroxide toothpaste. I found this in Crest but there may be others.

I also have studied and read everything I can find on this miserable condition. I can't enjoy eating a meal because the burning causes my eyes to tear and nose to run. Believe it or not, even yogurt with any flavoring, i.e. strawberry, orange, etc. causes burning. I went to the ENT and was given Evoxac but it hasn't seemed to help at all. When I took the pill for thrush it seemed to help the burning but I am told I don't have thrush so I shouldn't take the medication just to relieve a symptom. HELP!! I don't know what else to do. If the MD and ENT can't even tell me what this is and get rid of it what am I supposed to do. I'm so frustrated..... I used to love to cook but I can't even taste my food to make sure the seasoning is right.

I have been having this problem for the past two years. I'm so confused on what to drink and eat. When I first noticed this, I stopped eating all dairy products, chocolate and any spicy foods. I went to my denist, ENT and on 28th of this month I will be getting a biopsy to tell me if I have damage to my esophagus.

My problem is in the middle of the tonge-- it is very dry. I drink a gallon of water a day to keep my mouth moist.

Can anyone help me? My dad has been suffering with burning tongue for several years now ans we can't see to figure out why he has this problem. What kind of doctor should he go see for this problem? We have tried to take things out of his diet, he has gone off several medications one at a time to see if that is what is causing the burning. He has changed his toothpaste and mouthwash. He has seen a neurologist, his regular MD and an allergist. No one knows anything. Who should he see next. He is 83 years old today.

I am 36 years old and has always suffered from a burning toungue as far as I can remember. My brother is a GP and he told me that I have a geographical tongue and my dad also has this condition. It never used to bother me but as I grew older I noticed that if I ate sugary foods or wheat products e.g bread my toungue flares up sometimes I worry about it and am conscious that maybe people are looking at my tongue when I open my mouth but I guess I just have to leave with it because I have been told there is no cure. I have tried almost every mouthwash but nothing changes so I guess you just have to find foods that flare it up and try to avoid them but am not sure there is much you can do.

Tonight my tongue is flared up and very painful. I can feel the red spots outlined in white changing shape, and this is when the pain is the most. It's been bothering my all day. I would say it flared up after a few bites of strawberries this morning. Strawberries don't always cause a problem. I do notice raw tomatoes seem to cause episodes. As does vinegar - like balsamic, which is sadly a favorite food. Sometimes stress, and out of the middle of nowhere I feel like a canker has formed on my tongue and sure enough it's the size of a pencil eraser. Within hours it's gone then it comes back and changes shapes for a few days then it disappears for a week or so. Bad episodes like the one going on now make even the roof of my mouth and the insides of my cheeks burn and swell. Help? I don't know; this has been going on for years. I try L-Lysine, B vitamin supplement, Zinc supplement and avoiding foods like tomatoes, vinegar, strawberries, pineapple, etc. Cold salad seems to also be a trigger, especially dressing.

For over 4 months, I've been going through pretty much what I've read here, and it's definitely an annoying, painful, depressing condition. My tongue is so sore and burning, with my throat and lower lip contributing once in a while. I also have had numerous dr. visits, latest being an ENT. He gave me liquid Benedryl and liquid steroids to try, which I'm not sure is what helped before. This thing did go away completely for about 2-1/2 weeks and I was so elated! Now it's back (over 1 week now), and my life is miserable again! My ENT had given me Nexium before, and along with the 2 liquids, I'm just not sure what helped me before. I think realistically to find a solution to this puzzling ailment, it's best to try one med at a time, but of course, no one with these awful symptoms is going to have the patience to do it this way - therefore, it's hard to find out which med does treat this the best! At this point, I have been back on the 2 liquids for the past week, but they haven't helped. Tonight I start back on Nexium. Also, one thing my ENT told me is that since I'm 57 yrs. and menopausal, this could be hormonal. I've never been on HRT - really don't want to, but he suggested maybe that would help. My heart goes out to you all - it is such a weird illness!
