Hi, I have been taking asthma drugs for many years in allergy season. But, I am pregnant and don’t know if it is still safe for the baby to be exposed to the drugs?

Hi, it is true that medications of any kind are not recommended to be taken in pregnancy. Only your doctor can decide if these medications are providing you more benefit or harm. You are advised to avoid tobacco, alcohol, caffeine. Only, strictly necessary drugs should be used in pregnancy. There is increased chance for birth defects. Drugs can act directly on the fetus, damaging it, leading to abnormal development or death. Some drugs lead to changed function of the placenta, and reducing the supply of oxygen and nutrients. Contractions of uterus can lead to injuries and to preterm labor and delivery.
